Information available through Maag Library



Maag Library provides access to a wide variety of research resources to assist you with major and minor reseach projects. Taking the time to familiarize yourself with these resources before your projects are due will help you become a more efficient researcher. Below are some of the resources you may use and some tips for using them to find the information you need.


 
Locating Books

  • MaagNet (http://jupiter.ysu.edu/search), Maag Library's online catalog

    • Look here for books, government documents, ebooks and other materials owned by Maag Library. Search by subject, keyword, author or title. If you need help locating appropriate subject headings, try consulting the Library of Congress Subject Headings, a set of large red books located behind the Reference Desk in the Reference Room.

    • When you locate an item that you will use, copy or print the publication information (author, title, publisher, date) that is found on the title page of the book or in the catalog record for your Works Cited page.


    • Finally, note the item's Call Number and Location, then check the Building Guide to find the exact location

  • OhioLINK Central Catalog (combined catalog of OhioLINK member libraries)


    • Look here for books not available at Maag Library but owned by other Ohio colleges and universities. Some OhioLINK libraries may use Medical Subject Headings (MESH) in addition to or instead of Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).


    • You may request items from other OhioLINK istitutions if the status is Available. It typically takes 3-5 business days (M-F) for books requested through the OhioLINK Central Catalog to arrive. Check your circulation record to see the status of your request. Once the status is OhioLINK Rec'd, your item is at Maag Library and available at the Circulation Desk. Locating Research Articles

Many research articles are now available through online subscription databases. These articles are not internet resources, but journal articles that happen to be available online. To locate these articles, use the following tips to search the databases listed below.


 
Education Databases
Maag Library has access to several education databases. Use the links below to access these databases. All are available from on or off-campus. Follow the appropriate link. If only one link is provided, it is used for on and off campus access. For additional assitance, see Off-campus access and How to access OhioLINK databases.
  • Education Abstracts 1983-2006
    Provides references to articles from the published literature of education published through June 2006. Includes some full-text articles.


  • Education Research Complete On Campus   Off Campus
    Reference to articles from more than 1500 scholarly journals. Many articles have the full text available online. Includes articles on curriculum instruction, administration, policy funding and related social issues.


  • ERIC 1966-present
    ERIC provides citations to and abstracts of journal articles from the CIJE (Current Index to Journals in Education) as well as unpublished reports, papers and other monographs from RIE(Resources in Education). The unpublished materials (denoted by accession numbers beginning with ED) are generally available on microfiche in the Microform Center, Third Floor. Multidisciplinary Databases
Articles may be available in resources not specifically designated as education or educational administration resources. The following databases are additional places you may want to look for information.
  • Academic Search Premier On Campus    Off Campus
    A multidisciplinary database that indexes over 4300 periodicals and contains full text for over 3400 scholarly publications.


  • Dissertation Abstracts On Campus   Off Campus
    Provides citations and abstracts to theses and dissertations to colleges and universities in North America and Europe. See also the OhioLINK Electronic Theses and Dissertations Center. While some dissertations may be available through Interlibrary Loan, this is not always the case. If the holding library does not loan the dissertation through ILL, you must purchase a copy through UMI.


  • OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center (EJC)
    Full-text journals from OhioLINK electronic journal subscriptions. Currently includes over 6000 scholarly journals in a variety of disciplines.


  • JSTOR On Campus    Off Campus
    JSTOR or Journal Storage is an online journal archive. For those journals included in JSTOR, the full text of articles is available from the earliest issue up to the last 3-5 years (the actual delay varies by journal).


  • Social Science Citation Index (SSCI): On Campus    Off Campus
    Provides references to cited authors and articles as well as keyword searches in the literature of the social sciences.
  • Social Sciences Index On Campus    Off Campus
    Indexes journal articles in the social sciences, including topics in planning and public adminstration. Some full-text articles.
Law and Legislation Resources
As education is often affected by state or national legislation, the following resources allow you to access these legal reseource from a variety of sources.
  • Gongwer News Service On Campus    Off Campus
    Gongwer News Service provides daily coverage of issues in and around Ohio's government and political systems.


  • Lexis Nexis Academic On Campus    Off Campus
    LexisNexis Academic provides access to a wide range of news, business, legal, medical, and reference information from nearly 5,000 sources, most of them available in full text.
