As America was drawn into the Second World War, Youngstown College cancelled spring vacations and participated in a
national defense plan drawn up by the War and Navy Departments. This plan accelerated the time in which one could
earn a college degree to three years instead of the customary four. In addition, war-related classes were offered,
including signals, Morse code, meteorology, and navigation. On campus, Louis Deesz was named dean of the evening
engineering school, and YoCo’s second live penguin mascot, Pete II, succumbed to illness while staying at the
Cleveland Zoo. His mate, Patricia, was also found to be ill.
